This is a personal observation and I am happy to be proven wrong. Would it be too harsh to say we are seeing some of the weakest racing we've seen in decades? On a number of levels it seems broken. So much squib racing over 300m and less. A ridiculous amount of fighters and non chasers. Small fields, with some dogs just making up the numbers. Group racing being its weakest in decades. It could be a symptom of the breeding down turn a few years ago. Hopefully it's not systemic, because it puts the industry in a bad light.

100% agree. Class of dog in general pretty ordinary. Yet racing for the best $$ ever.

I believe prize money & lack of breeding incentives in NSW are two of the prime reasons the quality of breeding bitches ( other than a few exceptions )& therefore racing stock is down in NSW. No prize money increases since 2022 & no breeding incentives at all.Check out Queensland in comparison.Going ahead leaps & bounds. Other than for SA we have by far the lowest provincial prize money in Australia (check it out) & no plans to do anything about it.

The shortage of racing stock comes down to the rehoming problem breeders are not breeding because they do not want to be left with pups they can not sell due to a lot of people not buying because at the end of racing they can not keep them and the rehoming takes to long . owner trainers and trainers can not bring new dogs in because the kennel is full of dogs they can not move on ,we must focus on better and faster rehoming and bigger facilities.Prize money is good and it will get even better in time i think we should have to pay a percentage of our prize money towards bigger facilities for rehoming ,we have to fix this rehoming or the industry is gone .

3 280m races and a maiden race at a Wenty City meeting today shows there's a problem.

A lot of the dogs are ordinary, but the prize money is fantastic in Queensland especially.

I would say we have the weakest crop of dogs for a while when it comes to strength, but when it comes to speed id argue we have some of the fastest dogs ever bred.
Got dogs like Aston rupee going 28.79 at Sandown not too long ago. Dogs going 29.5-29.6 meadows, plenty going 29.7 on a regular basis now.
Hard to measure the quality as you can only beat what is in front of you at the time

Bulli Gold Cup heats on this week as well
They probably should have made the Bulli races this week and next week full city prizemoney and give it top billing and there would have been great fields for bigger prizemoney on a horseshoe track
Also no 700m races and wenty without a 600m start is doing it more harm than good

Exactly Sam, you could say the same thing about horse racing
It seems that Australia can't breed a decent stayer to save themselves to compete in Europe, we need to import them to make up staying fields
The sprinters in the last few years have been off the boil since nature strip went to England
As you say, you can only beat what is in front of you
I guess if people aren't happy with the standard of the dogs I am sure the punters don't really care

Who knows how good the dogs are. Most of them aren't chasing. Just about the worst I've ever seen it

lack of numbers and having to break in dogs with a bugs bunny stuffed toy on the lure instead of the real thing (dead of course) are the reasons. the authorities should be addressing the lack of numbers and act accordingly. i gather they just don't care or they would have improved things by now.

I bet semi-professionally on dogs and a couple of other things...Have been for a few years and the dogs in the last 18 months are pathetic. Where you use to be able to find one or two stand out bets a day that meets my criteria - Today you would be lucky to find 3-4 a week.
The breed is still great but lazy trainers and 300m races aren't ideal betting propositions!

Sorry to jump in here but this is something I'm wondering about. I constantly see 18 month old pups available because they are not chasing , also many dogs that do race are getting tickets. Is it the current bloodlines ? Rearing ? Or Educating ? The glut of these dogs has added immense stress on the rehoming problem especially for older dogs as there are so many pretty coloured young pups available as pets..

Surely it would be the bitches fault they dont chase robynne even if the pretty colours are derived from the sire line

Would I be out of line in saying maybe our governing bodies could look at supplying a sheep/roo skin that is branded or demarcated of some sort that is identifiable and could be available to break in establishments. Break in operators are probably more informed to answer if this could be of assistance.

Comes back to knowing lines. Some lines have always thrown chase & alot haven't. Can't hide behind what's on the trial arm now.

I remember Caesar Costa telling me that most mad chasers will bite on the arm even if just a piece of fluff. Break themselves in.
