Spot on Chris...

NSW breeders seem more intent on 'speed to speed' and many of our local sires reflect this.

People like Wheeler have had the foresight to breed for strength to tackle the Victorian city 600's and beyond.

NSW doesn't offer this so why breed towards it.

I once had a stayer....Spiral Magic....some of my greatest thrills in racing watching her highballing out in front over the 700.

Been saying it for years guys...

You need the powers that be to glorify and promote the stayers with to get the bulk of the breeders to make the shift

They have started to do so with more prizemoney for 600m+ races but what there is needed is more structured programming of 0-3, 1-5 win races and the commitment to structure them with as little as 5 dog fields

To develop stayers you need to have the races available to give the trainers the choices to race and develop them

Whilst sprint races are glorified the breeders will want to sell pups and they will breed to where the money and the glory is

Very true Brett, he seems to be generating a lot of stamina in the progeny

In saying that Turanza Bale got the 2 720m heat winners at Wentworth Park last night

Very true Sandro they need to promote these races and entice breeders to breed stayers.

We see it in Melbourne now you get a little more prize money for 6-700 races and they are promoting a lot of 600plus races with 1-6 wins with prize money of upto 5k plus Gobis. They also are promoting 0-3 wins over 600 plus with great prize money some races worth 3k plus for a single win not bad.

I know in vic we use to bred for speed with all our horse shoe tracks but we are starting to bred for strength and I think Bekim Bala is throwing a lot of goos stayers

Barry we wanted the same in Vic but you can she the shift over the past few years. I think PAW bred for more strength and we followed.

This is nothing new. Victoria has dominated staying ranks for quite a few years however I will say the depth has got even stronger with many Bekims working through the grades.

Starc & Ruff Cut Diamond (unlucky tonight!) look another two promising Bekim stayers. Perhaps a few should head north of the border as they would win plenty in Sydney staying races.

the winner has a good race in him that's for sure, starting to put it all together and gets better every run
both dogs are worth follow over the distance as they put a gap in the field in the first 250-300m. without interference the winner if not both dogs would of gone well under sub 42 for there first 700m runs and spaced the rest of the field

how long before every staying race is filled with bekim bales!

what are his figured like outside of victoria?
I can't say I've seen to many racing in other states to the same degree as I have in victoria

Considering you are flat out seeing a 700m race in the whole of NSW, a State that also happens to have the most tracks you have to commend Ray Smith on being able to travel Palawa King to Victoria and also for Ritza Piper to be based there for a month or so and taking out the 2 Group 1 staying races in Victoria over their Dreamchasers Festival

Victoria does a lot to promtote their staying breeds with several regional tracks having distances and races of 640m or more

We in NSW are totally deprived of any suitable racing to develop stayers the way they should be

Considering our dogs won 2 x Group 1 races in Victoria, how much better would our stayers be with enough racing opportunities to develop their talents

Sandro NSW is flat out running 440 - 565 races on the provincials let alone 600-700 races they went wrong when they made the 300 money equal to the other distances that has been adjusted now but it will take a bit of time to come good also with no 600 a w/park that definitely does not help .with the breeding dropping off we can only hope .

I was actually talking to someone the other day about this. Was waiting for a trial with 50-60 dogs in line majority absolutely losing the plot waiting their turn to have a run. Most dogs are purposely being kept a little bit fresh/on edge for a run over 300m because it's a minimum 3.5h drive for a race over further than 450m

There's most definitely a place for 300m races and I've had my share of dogs most suited to 300m, but there's zero incentive to try for further for a lot of participants. Travel 1-2h for a 300m race where if you get a bump and can come back to run a place or travel 4h both ways for a 500m race where one bump you're out to last and coming home with unplaced

Who said there wasn't?

Anyway, its not about 300m racing , there is 70% of racing under 440m in NSW. there is plenty for the squibs to choose from

We are talking about staying races

In any case, local tracks in all regions should be seeking to bump up prizemoney for all races 500m and above to incentivise trainers to try their dogs over longer without having to travel 100's of miles

as does SA with heaps and heaps of provincial 600 and 700 m races including Gawler & Mt Gambier. They go down to 4 dogs if need be to ensure they race in the low grades and that then translates to Angle Park.

Also in QLD they regularly get the 600 - 700 m races up.
