I'm personally not too fussed about weights of dogs, but I would like to hear other peoples thoughts on breeding from small bitches (e.g 24-25 kg).
Would a bitches size alter the
a) decision to mate b) the choice of sire c) the number of pups she could "safely" carry
???
Where does size rate on your scale of importance when picking a potential brood?

I like to see broods no smaller than about 26kg (preferably 29-30) but if I like the bitch enough I would have a crack with her regardless. I know a few guys that won't though if they're small.

Mark, my broodbitch Little Champion raced at 24kgs. Her litters to Elite State, Go Wild Teddy, Surf Lorian and Big Daddy Cool always presented my with bitches ranging from 24kg to 28kg and dogs from 29kg to 31kg.
Her smallest litter was 7 pups and largest was 10 from memory.
I think if the brood was a hard chaser that size shouldn't matter too much.

Size doesn't count for much at all IMO.
We have had a good run with this little bitch, nothing outstanding but handy dogs in each litter.

So, there's plenty of examples of small broodies that have produced so why do some people not like to breed from smaller bitches?

I have been told that Ted Doss from Osti line fame, apparently always picked out the biggest bitches in a litter to breed from & carry on the line.
Perhaps he thought that they provided more hybrid vigour because of their size.

i think the main problem is that the smaller they r the harder it is for them to get the pups out. many pups die from getting stuck.
to be safe it would probably be wise to get a c section for a real small bitch.
others on here would know much more about it i'm sure.

I breed from a 25 kg bitch and she gave me 33 kg dogs so i don't have a problem with that. Cheers attila

My bitch Mystique Porta raced at 23-24 kg...
3 litters all pups a very good size
In fact her first litter to Big Ginger Boy when i weighed her 4 dogs at 12months age were 35 kg..36kg..38kg..and 39kg..
So contrary to popular belief size does Not matter...

l suppose the fear is always one that the a small brood may throw small pups, however l have had 3 litters out of a 24.5kg bitch and all pups were a good size and never a problem with giving birth.

Our little bitch Pennybacker is a worthy addition to this topic! For anyone thinking of breeding a small bitch.
She won her maiden at Bulli at 21.2kg and got to a racing weight of no more than 22.7kg. Her first litter are all city class and better!
Shes natural whelped normal sized pups with ease (both litters) and looks after them like no other. I bred with her, because she was as hard a chaser Ive had and had a great nature! Shell make a great pet one day!

Sobbing Sal.I think that pretty well Kills the argument, worrying about breeding out of small bitches! 25.5 kg Bitch produced Brett Lee,who raced at 27kg from memory,and the likes of Big Daddy Cool etc. Don't care what they weigh,if they chased hard,and could run fast times,they should be bred with,simple as that!! Brett Lee would never of existed if the Owner of Sobbing Sal was worried about breeding out of small bitches!!
