Why the breeder all the time who will breed it cost plenty now with no breeders bonusses. If a levy is put in place it should be on the owner that buys the pups and again at the retirement of the dog .

Because it's the breeders who are breeding all these dogs
Maybe put a transfer fee when the pups are transferred
As I say
Your looking at around 4 million just to send 100 dogs to the usa
And every yr there is going to be a 1000 looking to be sent
That's huge money over time

I don't think the question is "Can we afford to send retired greyhounds to the US?". The reality is we MUST send dogs to the US to be rehomed or "Can we afford NOT to send retired greyhounds to the US?". The industry is almost at a crisis level with the backlog of retired dogs awaiting rehoming. A lot of them are sitting in kennels meant for race dogs. The cumbersome system GAP has become, is expensive to run and not producing the necessary results. As an industry we have to find alternative methods of rehoming and this US idea is fantastic. I've said it before, the greyhound would make a fantastic companion dog for our own Veterans suffering PTSD. It's a win win situation.

Welcome back Dixie. I think there are a number of ways we could go about it if we were fair dinkum and didnt want to get shot in the foot. You could start with a breeders contribution of lets say? $20 a pup. A Stud masters fee of 5-10% of the service fee. A transfer fee of $10 per purchase and GWIC match it in total. You could reduce the amount of services allowed annually. I know this is already happening but may need revisiting and working out some simple numbers. Whichever way you go youre not going to please everyone with ME included but we must start to create some new ideas and be pro active to maintain a way forward. Its the next generation of greyhound enthusiasts we need to think of also as we wont be around forever, so we should try and make a difference now for the sport into the future. Cheers

isn't 100 x $4k = $400,000 not $4M ?
shld add $4M for 1000 dogs to be sent away isn't actually a lot, when you consider the 20/21 Aus Greyhound Racing National Turnover was apparently $9.4 billion

Sorry my miss quote Ryan
Not all get there xyn z right
I'm no bright scholar
But I do try
Either way
It's still going to cost a fortune to do all this
Oh the good ole days where we walked around one eyed

The way I see it
It would cost around $4000 + to send a dog to the USA
So if they send 100 dogs in say 12mths that's
$400,000
This could end up costing greyhound industry millions to do this

Ryan
I did get it right the first time

howard, how accurate is the "huge demand" statement, for retired greys in US?

Australia are either behind Ireland or following the Irish Retired Greyhound Trust. They send them through Europe as well.

This is just a few of the recent arrivals in America in the last few weeks.

1: Chicago 28th April.
2: Atlanta 11th May.

Best of luck with your new families

Their population is 10 times Australia's. I'd imagine that alone is going to increase the likelihood of a demand. With their own greyhound industry all but finished, that opens even more opportunities. Throw in another like minded Country in Canada with a similar population to Australia and it's yet another outstanding prospect for the future.
